Getting your real estate licence is an important part of getting into the industry. Not only is it a requirement in the vast majority of states, but it also means that you will have something to show to your potential clients that will be able to inspire more confidence in them and assure them that you are the right person for the job.
However, getting one isn’t simply a case of applying and waiting for the paperwork to clear. In fact, each state has its own requirements in regards to what you will need to do to become eligible to hold a licence, with most requiring that you undertake a course of some description. Here we take a look at the things that you will need to do to get your licence.
Applying For The Course
Before you can even think about starting to get to work on obtaining your licence you need to be aware of the requirements of applying for your particular state. In many cases this means that you will need to meet a certain standard of education and, in some cases, may also have to meet an age and residency requirement as well.
The second important thing to consider is that most real estate licence courses will require you to pay some form of fee, which often needs to be paid on a fairly regular basis as the licence needs to be renewed. Be sure to do the research and discover what this fee will be before you apply, as you will need to account for it in your yearly budget.
Taking The Course
This is where the waters become a little muddier, as each state had completely different requirements for what you need to do to obtain a licence. For example, in California you will be asked to take three different courses that consist of 45 hours of lesson time every week and usually include an exam at the end of each module.
By contrast, getting a licence in Florida only requires you to sit 63 hours of classwork, whereas New York asks for 75 hours.
Whatever the requirement is, you must do the research beforehand to see just how much time you are going to need to put in when it comes to the actual learning part. Of course, in most cases you will also be required to complete exams and coursework, so you also need to know the minimum passing grades for each so that you have something to work towards.
How Long Will It Take
Disregarding the state-specific educational requirements, it will usually take you somewhere in the region of 4-6 months to obtain your real estate licence.
This time span includes everything from the initial application right through to the classroom time that you will need to put in and the amount of time that you will need to wait for paperwork to be completed.
As such, you should be prepared to study for the licence on a part time basis, assuming that you need to spend some time working to earn money for your household.
